USING VARK AND LEARNING PREFERENCES TO IMPROVE LEARNING.

Using the VARK questionnaire as a catalyst for improving learning in a range of different environments - training, education, sports coaching....

Participants will take a brief inventory (VARK-- Visual, Aural, Read/write and Kinesthetic) to identify any preferences for sensory modalities. These are used when taking in and giving out information. Participants will get feedback on their preferences and discuss the implications for their learning. We will examine some VARK profiles and your preferences for specific learning strategies. There will be contributions from research data. Participants (in groups) will be challenged to consider strategies within and 'outside' their own preferences and to consider methods for empowering learners to use their learning preferences to study AND learn more effectively.

Outcomes

At the end of the workshop you will:

  • know the basis from which VARK was created.
  • know more about your own preferences.
  • be able to use VARK confidently with your students.
  • recognize again the challenges in diverse classrooms.
  • have gathered strategies to cope with student diversity.
  • have recognized the diversity among your colleagues.
  • be keen to use your new knowledge with others.

55 STRATEGIES FOR TEACHING

A host of techniques based on learning principles for improving teaching and learning.

This very interactive workshop provides participants with at least 15 practical strategies to help learners. They are techniques that work on "Monday morning". The 55 Strategies that Neil offers ,cover a range of different contexts from lecture strategies to suggestions for involving learners in reflection and metacognition. There are opportunities for participants to contribute their own ideas to achieve more effective learning. The workshop uses group work in an interesting and engaging way.

Outcomes

At the end of the workshop you will:

  • leave with a number of practical suggestions for change
  • have contributed your own best practice ideas for others..
  • have identified the learning potential in a number of examples from best practice.
